Coalstack vs MCSManager

The short version

MCSManager is a free, open-source control panel that runs as a web service on the machine hosting your servers. It is much lighter to install than Pterodactyl - no Docker, no database server - and it will supervise more or less any process you point it at, Minecraft included.

The difference from Coalstack is the shape of the thing. MCSManager is a panel you host and then open in a browser; Coalstack is an application you install and open. Both end up running a server on your own hardware.

Where MCSManager wins

• Free and open source, with no tiers and nothing held back.
• Linux today. It runs anywhere Node.js does, including the cheap VPS your server may already be on. Coalstack is Windows-first for now.
• Any device on the network can manage it. It's a web page, so a phone or tablet on the same LAN works with nothing extra installed.
• Not limited to Minecraft, and one panel can manage instances across several machines.

Where Coalstack wins

• Nothing to install first. No Node runtime, no terminal, no service to register - a signed installer and an app that updates itself.
• Remote access without opening anything. Reaching an MCSManager panel from outside your house means forwarding a port to a web panel and owning whatever finds it. Coalstack's app polls coalstack.net outbound instead, so nothing on your machine accepts inbound connections - the relay passes through coalstack.net, which is the trade you're making for that.
• It understands Minecraft. Crash logs read and explained by the Auto Debugger, and Modrinth mods installed from inside the app - both free. Compatibility checks and modpacks are PRO features.
• Automation aimed at this game. Crash detection and notifications are free; scheduled restarts, automated backups, and Discord webhooks come with PRO, and are built around how a Minecraft server actually gets run.

Which should you use?

Coalstack if you're on Windows and you want software that knows what a Fabric dependency conflict is, installs mods for you, and explains why the server died - without you hosting a web panel to get it.

MCSManager if your server is on Linux, or you need to manage things that aren't Minecraft. It's a capable panel for that.
